American Idiot The Musical

Green Day’s American Idiot The Musical presented by Bank of America Broadway Across America and the Florida Theatrical Association delivers a musical sensation for lovers of the theater arts and fans of the American Punk Rock band Green Day that formed in 1987. The East Bay, California band is well-known for their discography of 39/Smooth, Kerplunk, Dookie (which was their first collaboration with Rob Cavallo and major record debut that became a worldwide commercial success), Insomniac, Warning, and their Grammy Award winning album for Best Rock Album, American Idiot (2005). American Idiot also won the Grammy for Record of the Year for the song “Boulevard of Broken Dreams“ (2006).

The 90-minute one act adaptation of the entire album is based on three disillusioned friends Johnny, Will, and Tunny. While Johnny and Tunny escape their traditional suburban lifestyle restricted by their parents, Will stays behind to nurture a deteriorating relationship with his pregnant girlfriend. Johnny and Tunny quickly land within the freedom of city-life and excitement which overwhelms Tunny and drives him to enlist in the military only to be deployed to war. Johnny finds himself in a drug-induced world while falling in love with a girl he met in the city.

The musical originated from the book that was written by Billy Joe Armstrong who is the lead vocalist, principal songwriter, and guitarist for Green Day, and director Michael Mayer who is known for his Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical in 2007 for directing Spring Awakening. Featuring all of the multi-platinum selling album’s songs and more, American Idiot The Musical was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Musical and went on to win Tony Awards for Best Scenic Design of a Musical, Best Lighting Design of a Musical (2010), and a Grammy for Best Musical Show Album (2011).
