Memphis The Musical

We were recently invited to “turn up the dial” at the Broward Center of the Performing Arts to watch Bank of America Broadway Across America & Florida Theatrical Association present “Memphis” the musical on its opening night going on now through March 9, 2014. “Memphis” the musical is a 4-time Tony Award Winner that included Best Musical in 2010!

Rightfully so! Memphis is a blast from the past! The musical takes place in 1950s Memphis, Tennessee and is a loose rendition of Dewey Philips who was one of the first white disc jockeys (DJs) to play black music during that time. In “Memphis,” a white man named Huey Calhoun steps foot into Delray’s, which is a black underground Rock and Roll bar and is entranced with what he calls, “The Music of my Soul.” Huey meets Felicia who is a beautiful black woman and falls head over heels in love with her and promises to put her on the radio one day after listening to her sing.

0-21From that point forward, “Memphis” takes you on a journey through the 1950s, the segregation of races, love, and the one thing that unites us all, MUSIC! Huey becomes a popular local DJ and keeps his promise to Felicia all while refuting the cultural divide of that era. The musical continues with memorable scenes, irresistible songs, and thrilling dances as Huey helps Felicia become a star.

Based on the book by Joe DiPietro and music by David Bryan, Memphis tunes into your heart and tells a tale of fame and forbidden love. Winner of 2010’s Tony Award for Best Musical, Best Original Score by Bon Jovi’s founding member David Bryan, Best Book of a Musical, and Best Orchestration, Memphis delivers on all stations!

Get your tickets and catch “Memphis” the musical at the Broward Center of the Performing Arts now through March 9, 2014 before it’s too late!
